He chased lions and bears that attacked the flock and rescued young lambs from their mouths. First, God found David as a young shepherd who cared for the family’s flock with his life. God chose David even though his family had deserted him. He perfected his skillsĪlthough David was abandoned to shepherd duties, he found a haven in the wilderness where he fellowshipped with God in prayer, singing and playing the lyre. Interestingly, when a promotion is due, they line up like the sons of Jesse did but God who looks at the heart knows the right persons for the promotion. This form of obedience is rare in our days because our generation see themselves as being too special to do menial services or help others. ![]() Rather, he was obedient to his father and carried out his shepherd duties without murmuring. Neither did he complain about being left alone in the wilderness to shepherd the family’s flock. As we just described, David was a fresh (handsome) young man but he didn’t let his looks get into his head. Obedience to both God and man often becomes a challenge when you consider yourself better than others. Obedience is a vital lesson many people struggle with. As a shepherd, David armed himself with certain lessons that I want us to learn and apply them in our walk with God in this life. This shepherd boy did not allow his family, present location and life’s inconveniences deter him from drawing closer to God and finding his purpose on earth. Possibly without love, made to do all the difficult chores and maltreated. Such was the situation that David found himself. Consider a scenario when your parents are asked to present all their children and you never came to mind. That aside, he suffered rejection from his family as one forgotten or left to die in the wilderness. Shepherd BoyĪs a shepherd, David was exposed to many dangers in the wilderness. Yet, this fresh lad was left in the wilderness to shepherd the family’s flock. The Bible described David as healthy, handsome and with a fine appearance. His background is unique because his ancestry traces to Ruth, the Moabite who followed Naomi back to Bethlehem (Ruth 1:16) and within this bloodline came Jesus Christ. He had seven (7) elder brothers and (2) younger sisters. The life of David could be your life or mine, so as we read about the life of one great, but ordinary man, we also read about the life of a sinner saved by the grace of God.David was the youngest son of Jesse of Bethlehem. The Life of David is not only a breath-taking story: it is also a valuable lesson - because even when things are going well, we can walk whack-bang into danger just like him. However, as is the case in every human story, there are human failings too. Marvel as one after another of his enemies bites the dust - whether giants or fierce foreign tribes.
